We’re a backcountry canoe-tripping camp located on two island basecamps on Lake Temagami in Northern Ontario. NWL offers outdoor adventures for boys, girls, and all-gender youth designed to engage and empower young people at a given stage in adolescent development. Within the context of a fun and challenging canoe trip, we use proven techniques in community building, group process and storytelling to create a pathway through adolescence. This approach makes us unique among wilderness adventure camps. Our commitment to providing high quality programs with intentionality has allowed us to create a strong and vibrant community of staff, participants, and parents.

Maintenance / Facilities Manager- Join Us for Summer 2024!

Northwaters & Langskib is excited to welcome a committed Maintenance/Facilities Manager to our Lake Temagami island basecamps this upcoming summer. This full-time seasonal role, running from June to August/September, centers on maintaining and repairing our grounds and facilities.

Desired Qualities:
We’re seeking a mature, self-driven individual with a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate adeptly manages diverse work crews and seamlessly integrates into our community environment.

Required Skills:

  • Small engine maintenance and repair experience
  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills
  • Proficiency in mechanical tasks and chainsaw operation
  • Possession of a clean driver’s license
  • Physical fitness for navigating rugged terrain
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to perform scheduled maintenance checks
  • Efficient inventory and supply management
  • Capability to work autonomously and oversee unskilled labor
  • Professional collaboration with vendors and suppliers
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card and motorboat handling proficiency

Additional Valued Skills (Not Mandatory):

  • Advanced carpentry and boat building expertise
  • Enhanced mechanical proficiency
  • Previous experience in remote facilities management
  • Certification as a trained water system operator
  • F Class Driver’s license
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certification

Contract Details:

  • Preferred start date: June 1, 2024
  • Contract duration: June 1 – August 20, 2024 (potential extension through September 30)

Camp Cook/Assistant Cook

Job Overview:

Northwaters and Langskib are seeking a full-time cook to join our team for the 2023 summer season. The ideal candidate is an experienced cook, comfortable living in a communal summer camp environment, and enjoys nature and the outdoors. In collaboration with kitchen assistants, cooks prepare three homemade, nutritionally balanced meals daily for varying numbers, ranging from 10 to 250 (depending on the schedule), which accommodate various dietary requirements. Cooks also manage a budget, inventory, scheduling, and menu planning. Northwaters and Langskib operate two island base camps, each with a dedicated cook. The Camp Cook position is specifically for Langskib and will involve working collaboratively with the Head Cook at Northwaters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare three homemade, nutritionally balanced meals daily for varying numbers in camp, ranging from 10 to 250 (depending on the schedule).
  • Accommodate a wide range of dietary needs, including but not limited to vegetarian, vegan, and wheat allergies.
  • Oversee the work of kitchen assistants.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Work with Program Directors to place weekly food orders and coordinate food and supply deliveries.
  • Manage inventory, menu planning, and scheduling.
  • Accurately track food usage and costs to help manage a budget.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and standards.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head Cook at Northwaters.

  • At least three months of prior experience cooking for camps, schools, or other large groups.
  • Prepping and cooking experience (preferably for large numbers).
  • A knowledge of specialty diet menus, including but not limited to vegetarian, vegan, and wheat allergies.
  • A strong understanding of nutrition.
  • Strong organizational and people skills.
  • Experience managing a budget, inventory, menu planning, and scheduling.
  • Current Food Safety Certification.
  • Comfortable living in a communal summer camp environment.
  • Hard-working.

Outfitting Director

This position oversees all aspects of outfitting trips at NWL. The Outfitting Director manages both outfitting food and equipment inventories. They are responsible for menu implementation, food ordering and acquisition, facilitating packing and distribution for out trips. Together with the Operations Manager they will manage and facilitate repair and distribution of all outfitting gear including canoes, tents, packs, paddles, wannigans etc. Contract from June 20– August 20, 2024.
