Emily grew up in Temagami at her parent’s outfitting company, Smoothwater Outfitters. Paddling before she could walk, Emily’s enthusiasm for wilderness and water-based adventures led her parents to seek out camps that would complement her passion.

After attending a variety of canoe tripping camps in Temagami and Algonquin Park, Emily eventually found Northwaters & Langskib in 2004. Inspired by the community of leaders that empowered her to be authentic and allowed her the time and space to get to know herself, Emily quickly realized she wanted to work for NWL one day. She spent the next seven summers as a participant and the following seven as a trip leader, eventually transitioning to her current role as Program Director.

Emily has a strong background in outdoor education and adventure guiding, having worked for a variety of companies offering whitewater kayak and canoe instruction in British Columbia, Ontario, and New Zealand. Emily has also spent a year working for a wilderness therapy organization in Ontario leading winter camping trips for youth struggling with addiction. Most recently, she began working as a whitewater kayak instructor at Thompson Rivers University. Emily has a diploma in Adventure Guiding, a B.A in Interdisciplinary Studies, and is starting a MEd in Leadership Studies at the University of Victoria in September.

Emily loves to trail run, practice yoga, and explore the world by means of her whitewater kayak. She has recently cultivated a love for cooking, inspired by her decision to adopt a vegan lifestyle.
